WHAT IS JALI?

The word ‘jali' means net or mesh. Prevalent in northern parts of India, the ancient Jali work or lattice work is a craft of hand-carving in wood or stone. Beautiful and elaborate geometric or nature inspired designs were created with patterns of open spaces in-between to facilitate ventilation through screens/panels. Originally employed for architectural purposes, this ornamental craft made its way very well into creation of rich, decorative and utility items and transcends the test of times.
